Boreal forests

These extensive northern forests, also known as Taiga or snow forests, consist mostly of pines, spruces and larches. Climate change will entail increasing water stress and peak summer heat as well as increased vulnerability to diseases. As the world warms, we can expect more forest fires with increased release of carbon dioxide as a result. A global mean warming of three to five degrees Celsius could lead to large-scale dieback of the forests within 50 years.
